STEP ONE:

Before starting your job, set your camera in automatic rotation mode. This way when you download the images to your computer, they will display in the right way, regardless of how you have shot them (landscape or portrait).

STEP TWO

 
Set your camera to capture the highest possible quality; to achieve a good image,  the camera quality should be set higher than 5MP. This is also important for good quality prints.

STEP THREE

Photo Recognition: To obtain a good reading of the bib number it must be shown clear in the target area.

Photo Finish:

For this option the most important is to shoot the photos when athletes are crossing the finish line. Try to avoid that runners who just finished don't spoil the new photos of the runners coming from the back, crossing the finishing line. A good idea to avoid this, is to elevate your tripod as high as possible or use a camera crane.
